The historic Knollwood area of Southern Pines is nestled midway between the picturesque town of Southern Pines and the charming Village of Pinehurst, bracketed by the world-renowned Donald Ross golf courses at Mid-Pines and Pine Needles. RESIDENCE:
The Ivy Cottage was built in 1925 as a part of famed architect Aymar Embery’s Mid-Pines Inn and golf resort. Perched on a wooded hilltop directly overlooking the 10th and 11th holes of Mid-Pines, the 180-degree expanse encompasses views of three additional fairways creating the best golf views in Moore County. Under new ownership in 1995, the Ivy House and Cottage experienced a complete renovation turning the former Mid-Pines lodging quarters back into a residence. The main house was fitted with a new cottage style entry that opens to a spacious kitchen custom designed to fit the architectural history. A cooking alcove over the range includes convenient built in spice shelves and a shelf above fitted with halogen lighting for cooking enjoyment. The crisp white custom cabinetry has carefully designed shelving for generous storage and is backed by traditional bead board wall paneling. The kitchen opens to a sun filled breakfast room with French doors and a wall of windows with access to expansive tiered decking on the southwest side of the house. The decks with built-in benches incorporate mature landscaping, towering long leaf pines, dogwoods and vegetable gardens that thrive with tomato and strawberry plants, making for a breathtaking view.

A newly conceived butler’s pantry and powder room service the formal dining room which overlooks the terraced deck through bay windows fronted by a window seat. Further enhancing the site, a brick floored Carolina/family room opens to a brick patio, which looks out on perennial beds with mature pines and the golf course beyond. In the traditional Embery style of building residences, the circular gravel driveway services the back of the house and the exquisite arched front door and matching arched living room window face the golf views. The living room, also overlooking the bricked patio, has a wood burning fireplace.

A downstairs guest suite has a newly renovated, beautifully tiled full bath and cozy dressing room with generous closet storage featuring a vintage shoe closet. The spacious second floor master bedroom is serviced by a laundry area and ample closet storage. A charming master bath with Jacuzzi tub, also featuring traditional bead board detail, has a magnificent second story view of the golf course. An additional second floor bedroom is large and characterized by the nooks and crannies only older homes provide. A full bath featuring bead board walls also services this bedroom.

The guest house has been completely renovated this Spring, 2007. A gallery styled entry staircase leads up to a custom designed kitchen/living area with new appliances, granite counters and a gorgeous birds-eye view of the 11th hole tee box and 10th fairway beyond. Glass French doors lead to a sun filled bedroom with fireplace and newly tiled full bath. Downstairs is a roomy bedroom/sitting area, also with full bath. It features windows overlooking a cottage style garden between the main house and guest-house on one side and a view of the golf course on the other. A two car garage with original wood doors and glass panes is tucked under the second story addition of the guesthouse.

During renovation, all windows in the guest-house and 95% of the windows in the main house were replaced with easy to open casement style windows.
